[1] See main text, Chapter 4.  The Ipm, PRO C 144/134/144, is a complex document, in good condition,, written on vellum in a 16th century legal Latin script.  I have a photocopy of the original and an English translation.

[2] By convention the statement of value in an Ipm would under-estimate the actual value of the properties.  For example, the Templeton purchase price in 1545, corresponding to a standard valuation of 20 years income, would imply a true annual income of £24.4s.  See, for example, H J Habakkuk, EcHR, 2nd series, x, 1958, 362-380.  See also Appendix 4 of the present text, fn.3 where it is stated that in 1545, excluding woodland, the net income from Templeton was £20.11s.3½d.  Hence the likely actual value of George Losemore’s estate in 1562 would be in the range £60-90 per year, perhaps as high as £100 per year, a comfortable income for a minor gentleman, apart from his business income as a clothier.
